The District of Tumbler Ridge is working with Urban Systems to develop a comprehensive Residential Development Plan. The primary objective of this plan is to establish a strategic framework for responsible and sustainable growth in Tumbler Ridge. The plan will play a pivotal role in evaluating and maximizing the potential of identified land parcels for housing development, considering environmental, social, and economic factors.
Background
Tumbler Ridge was established in 1981 to support the metallurgical coal industry. Over the years, the community has faced economic fluctuations due to the boom-and-bust nature of resource industries. While mining remains a key sector, Tumbler Ridge is actively diversifying its economy through tourism, renewable energy, and outdoor recreation. The UNESCO Global Geopark designation, expansion of the community forest, and growing entrepreneurial opportunities highlight the town’s potential for sustainable growth.
Despite these advancements, challenges persist, including infrastructure needs, demographic shifts, and the remote location. The Residential Development Plan will help address these issues by guiding responsible growth and ensuring a stable housing market for the future.
Project Objectives
The Residential Development Plan aims to:
Evaluate Land Suitability: Assess identified land parcels for housing development while considering environmental, social, and economic factors.
Review Infrastructure Capacity: Identify necessary upgrades or improvements to support new residential growth.
Engage the Community: Involve residents, stakeholders, and experts in the planning process to ensure inclusivity and transparency.
Analyze Financial Implications: Estimate costs and explore potential funding sources to support housing initiatives.
Provide Strategic Growth Planning: Establish a framework for responsible and sustainable development that aligns with Tumbler Ridge’s long-term vision.
Support Housing Needs Goals: Address the priorities identified in the 2024 Housing Needs Report and propose actionable strategies to increase housing stock.
